Sambha died last week in Mumbai at the age of 71. The dialogue stuck to him and in his last film, Zoya Akthar’s ‘Luck by Chance,’ playing himself, Mac Mohan, standing in front of a group of students, willingly obliged them by repeating the three words. In the world of Hindi films, character actor Mac Mohan starred in 175 films in 45 years but is remembered for the three word dialogue, “Poore Pachchas Hazaar” in the immortal blockbuster, ‘Sholay’ where as Sambha, he was the sidekick to the villainous Gabbar Singh (Amjad Khan). We remember as fondly the sidekick Sancho Panza as his master, Don Quixote. Despite Elizabeth and Darcy, Bingley and Jane, everyone remembers the preacher clown Collins in Jane Austen’s ‘Pride and Prejudice’ and his unforgettable proposal to Elizabeth. Never underestimate the sidekick, both in films and in books.
